Cheese is undoubtedly delicious, but for some, selecting from a vast array of cheeses can be intimidating. It’s been said that the best way to learn more about it, is to eat more of it. In this list, we look at some of the best places to buy and learn about cheese in Sydney.
Formaggi Ocello
(Shop 16, 425 Bourke Street Surry Hills Sydney)
Formaggi Ocello specialises in Italian, French, Australian farmhouse and rare cheese. They boast more than 200 cheeses on display. They have their own maturation room that is visible to store customers and best of all – they allow sampling of the cheese before you decide to purchase. They also have available the cheese “cake” – a stack of different wheels of cheese for special events and occasions like weddings or birthdays. They hold cheese and wine tasting events, and soon will be hosting tasting tours in Italy.
The Stinking Bishops
(Shop 5 Enmore Road, Newtown)
The owners Jaime Nimmo and Keiran Day named the store after a British washed-rind cheese. This cheesemonger has a good selection of cheese from both Australia and abroad, which they shift around depending on seasonal availability. The great thing about The Stinking Bishops is that all of their cheeses are available for purchase so you can take them home. For those dining in, they offer cheese and meat boards with a hand-selected list of wines, beers, and whiskey. They have very helpful staff who will assist you with alcohol pairings and in selecting which cheese to take home.
GPO Cheese and Wine Room
(Lower Ground Floor, GPO Grand, 1 Martin Place, CBD, Sydney)
In the “Temple of Cheese,” apart from the great selection of cheese, they also have pairings in their dedicated Cheese and Wine Room. They have a selection of 100 seasonal cheeses and 250 boutique wines to choose from. You can buy cheese from them to take home, or soak up the atmosphere in-house in their Cheese and Wine Room.

The Cheese Shop is a quaint little cafe and cheese shop. It’s the place to go for cheese in Mosman. It has a great selection of Australian cheese and also cheese from abroad. They also have a selection of other deli items such as sandwiches and other small goods.

(Shop 1, Sydney Fish Market, Bank Street, Pyrmont, Sydney)
Located within the Sydney Fish Market, Blackwater Deli has a broad selection of cheese. They also carry other specialty items like cured meats, sauces, pastas and other small goods. It’s also a cafe for those with a hankering for some coffee after a wander through the Sydney Fish Market.
